The country of Bhutan is also known as Druk Yul or “The Land of the Thunder Dragon” due to the wild thunderstorm that strikes the valley from the peaks of the Himalayas. The Himalayan region of Bhutan lies on the southern end with Gangkhar Puensum (7,570m/24,840 ft) being the highest mountain in the country.

The country of Bhutan is marked with beautiful and colorful monasteries, gompa, stupas, and monuments that broadcast the rich cultural and religious practices that have been persisting in Bhutan for a long time. The Bhutanese follow Buddhism, typically Vajrayana Buddhism as the main religion. Similarly, the dominance of Buddhism in Bhutan can be seen through the occasional occurrence of colorful prayer flags, prayer wheels, thanka paintings, costumes, chortens, and statues that showcase the Buddhist culture.

Our exploration of the heritage of the medieval cities of Kathmandu valley shall begin today. The heart of the ancient city, Kathmandu Durbar Square is famous for the ancient Royal Palace with several courtyards in the inner complex and other interesting temples with intricate carvings and monuments in the outer complex. The house of Goddess Kumari, worshipped as the Living Goddess, Bhairav Temple, Taleju Temple, and others, almost all built-in pagoda-style from 15th to 18th century.
Swayambhunath Stupa is one of the ancient religious destinations believed to be founded 2000 years ago. With 365 steps on the eastern side and a brightly painted gate with a 12 feet tall prayer wheel. It is believed the background of this pagoda Swoyambhu Nath came into existence of Kathmandu valley.This ancient Buddhist temple is populated by several monkeys thereby giving it the name. The famous eyes of Buddha and the whitewashed dome of the main stupa are marvelous. With several Buddhist symbols and ensembles, some Hindu temples, and a perfect view of Kathmandu valley. In the late afternoon come back to the hotel.
Arrive at Paro International Airport and receive a warm Bhutanese welcome. Begin your journey with a short stop at the charming Tamchog Lhakhang en route to Thimphu. In the capital, visit the magnificent Buddha Dordenma overlooking the valley and explore Tashichho Dzong, a striking fortress-monastery that houses the King’s office.
Thimphu Cultural Sightseeing Start the day at the Memorial Chorten, a vibrant site of daily worship. Visit the Institute of Zorig Chusum to observe students learning Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts. Explore the Folk Heritage Museum and Changangkha Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Thimphu. Enjoy a stroll through the Centenary Farmer’s Market (if visiting on a weekend) and browse for souvenirs in local artisan shops.
Drive up to Dochula Pass (3,100 m), famed for its panoramic Himalayan views and the 108 memorial chortens. Pause for tea and photo opportunities. Return to Paro in the afternoon. Explore Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most revered temples, believed to date back to the 7th century. Optional: Try a traditional hot stone bath in the evening.
Embark on a scenic hike to Taktsang Monastery, famously known as Tiger’s Nest. Clinging dramatically to a cliffside, this sacred site is a must-visit for every traveler. Take in the spiritual ambiance and enjoy views of the Paro Valley before descending.
Departure from Paro Enjoy a leisurely breakfast with final glimpses of the serene mountains before transferring to the airport for your onward journey.
